Commenting on the trial, Mid and East Antrim councillor, Lauren Gray said: "Schemes like this are a great way to change mindsets and encourage users to recognise the impact of their actions on the local environment.

"I'm also working to get a recycling bin in the park when the trial ends. We need to get inventive in creating opportunities for recycling, ending our overuse of waste to landfill. Another reason we need a Green New Deal.

"Thanks to everyone who raised this issue. If you have a concern always speak up and help us make positive changes to our town."

A spokesperson for Mid and East Antrim Borough Council confirmed that the local authority will monitor the progress of the trial and will "consider rolling it out in other 'hotspot' areas in the borough".

Meanwhile, a community fridge scheme is being set up to help tackle food waste in Carrickfergus - read more here.
