Local villages celebrate ‘In Bloom’ double

THE villages of Ahoghill and Broughshane were among the top gardening talent officially recognised at the 2011 Translink Ulster in Bloom awards presentation in Derry.

Along with councils, businesses, community groups, bus and rail stations, they were presented with special awards for their efforts to improve the appearance of their areas using beautiful floral and plant displays.

Ahoghill received the Small Town Award and Broughshane the Large Village Award in the Translink Ulster in Bloom presentations made at the Beech Hill Country House Hotel.

Speaking at the awards presentation, Simon Corrigan, Translink Western Area Manager, said: “Ulster in Bloom is a celebration of the wonderful work that goes on all year round right across Northern Ireland to enhance the appearance of our villages, towns and cities.

“Eye-catching floral and plant displays are enjoyed by both local people and tourists, boosting civic pride and improving economic and social prosperity.

“This is an exciting time for Northern Ireland with many high profile events planned and it will be a great opportunity to showcase all we have to offer visitors.

“Ulster in Bloom participants will also play an important role in making the Northern Ireland visitor experience a more enjoyable and memorable one.

“Congratulations to all the winners and we hope their efforts inspire others to get involved in gardening and participate in the 2012 Ulster in Bloom Competition.”
