New bins for garden waste being rolled out across city and district council

A council spokeswoman said that following a pilot scheme last year where they provided a limited number of bins for garden waste, the authority is now beginning to deliver the bins more widely to the public.

Previously she said residents had a food waste bin, but not one specifically for garden waste.

Now in the next few weeks 12,000 brown bins for green waste will be delivered.

Green waste includes leaves, grass, weeds, dead plants, cold ashes, twigs and small branches and flowers.

Materials including rubble, plant pots and plastic food packaging are not suitable for disposal in these bins.

While a number of areas across the council area already have the brown bins, this additional roll-out should mean the majority of householders will soon have one.

Among the areas set to be included in the scheme are: Culmore; Drumahoe, Lettershandoney/Campsie; Crescent Link Area; Prehen/Old Strabane Road/Shepherd’s Glen; Ballymagroarty/Hazelbank/Glen Area; Ballyarnett/Lenamore area; Kilfennan; Caw/Nelson Drive; Belt Road, Trench Road/Church Brae/Tullyally/Currynierin; Duncreggan/Pennyburn/Culmore Road/Greenhaw and Steelstown Road areas.

People receiving bins from next week will also receive advice on how to use them, as well as details of their collection date.

The mayor Michaela Boyle said: “With the current pandemic, more and more people are at home and spending time in their gardens and having the garden waste bins to dispose of their green waste will be very beneficial.”
