New speed limit invites carnage

ALLOWING new drivers to do 70 mph on motorways is to invite carnage, a local MLA has said.

Sam Gardiner described proposals that new drivers should be allowed to drive at 70 mph on motorways as “silly in the extreme” and not the sort of thing a sensibly minded administration should even be considering.

“Reducing the driving age to 16 is one thing, especially if learners cannot sit the test for a year, as is the case in the USA.

“You have got to ask what sort of thought processes even result in a proposal being considered by the Environment Minister to allow new drivers to travel at 70 mph on the motorway.

“I cannot see how this can be part of any proposal to reduce insurance costs here.

“Rather, I think it will be a charter for insurers to drive up costs.

“Such a proposal could invite serious carnage on our roads.”
