Plans submitted to Causeway Coast & Glens Council for works at Coleraine train station

Plans for various works at Coleraine train station have been submitted to Causeway Coast & Glens Council.

The planning application proposal reads: “The proposed works relate to a number of different areas of the building as follows: renovation of the old station building roof and replacement of a small roof area, renovation of the platform 1 canopy, installation of roof access facilities, adjustment of the wall between the entrance 'rotunda' and the platform to assist circulation, lining of the existing footbridge balustrade to resist climbing”.

A Design and Access Statement said: “Coleraine train station was opened by the Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine and Portrush Junction Railway on 4 December 1855. The building was designed by the renowned architect Charles Lanyon.”

The statement added: "The proposals generally provide for enhanced safety in the usage and maintenance of the station with regard to both the historic old building and later additions. The plans also provide for preservation of threatened elements of the existing historic fabric through treatment and, where necessary, replacement of failing timber rafters or joists.

"Previous neglect has led to water ingress in a number of areas, while existing roof timbers typically show evidence of rot or infestation. Following review with the Historic Environment Division, the proposals have been revised to generally retain the historic fabric, while completing significant fabric and safety improvements.

"Impact on the existing historic fabric is therefore considered to be minimal, while serving to preserve much of the building for future generations.”

The plans will now go before Causeway Coast and Glens Council’s Planning Committee for consideration.
