Second hand furniture helps to save lives

A LOCAL charity is asking people in Lisburn to recycle their unused quality furniture and other household items at the Action Cancer shop at 51 Market Square.

Lisburn store manager Ann Rice said: “For years Action Cancer has benefited from the loyalty and generosity of local people. We rely on quality donated furniture, clothes, books and other items which means that our customers pick up a bargain and the charity saves lives and supports people in your local community.”

Action Cancer is the only charity in Northern Ireland offering breast screening to women aged 40–49 and over 70, those who fall outside the NHS screening age (50–70). The charity also offers MOT health checks for men and women, support services including counselling and complementary therapies, and a range of health promotion programmes. To maximise the value of donated goods, Action Cancer is asking any UK taxpayer who makes a donation to one of its retail stores to sign up to the Gift Aid Scheme and enable the charity to claim a further 25p to the pound back from the taxman.

Peter Lynch, retail manager for Action Cancer, commented: “By signing up to the Gift Aid scheme a typical dining room table sold for £140 would raise an additional £35 - the cost of a complementary therapy session for a person affected by cancer.

“Last year the people of Northern Ireland helped our stores to raise nearly £900,000 through our charity shops and recycling. Members of the public who Gift Aided their donations generated another £80,000.”

All Action Cancer shops welcome donations of good quality furniture, clothes, bric-a-brac, books and household items.

Larger items can be collected free of charge from your home. For more information on how to donate contact the Lisburn Action Cancer shop on 9266 7772.
