Traffic changes for town

A complicated mesh of traffic lights and slip lanes has led to motorists finding it challenging to negotiate one of the busiest road junctions in the town.

A Roads Service spokesperson said: “In advance of the impending public realm works announced by Craigavon Council, Roads Service carried out a review of traffic signal operated junctions in Lurgan.

“Following an inspection of the Edward Street/Millennium way junction in the town, Roads Service is making a number of improvement that will benefit motorists and pedestrians.

“While the existing parking and loading facilities will remain unchanged, several additional spaces will be provided.

“Work commenced on Monday, July 23, and is expected to be complete by the end of October.”

Controversy had plagued phase one of the works in Market Street and Church Place with constant complaints of traffic disruption.

The second phase of the £1.95 million Public Realm works includes work to Edward Street and William Street as well as High Street to Malcolm Road.

The project is in partnership with Craigavon Borough Council and the Department of Social Development.

It will include new surfaces, lighting, street furniture and landscaping of a quality consistent with that in the completed area around Market Street and Church Place.

A contractor is expected to be appointed in August and construction to begin in September. The work is scheduled for completion in May next year.
