Equality Commission visits North-West

Over 50 delegates from businesses in the north-west attended the event in the City Hotel, to learn about key equality law, case law and potential developments in Northern Ireland.

Paul Oakes, Equality Commission for Northern Ireland said: “The Employer Equality Update events are some of the most popular and well attended annual events that we host, and we are delighted to have such an excellent turnout from all types of businesses in the area.

“Employers need to be aware of any changes or amendments to the law that may have been introduced as well as the lessons to be learned from cases that have been heard in courts or tribunals. These are important developments which may well have an impact on them and how they conduct their business.”

The Commission’s role in assisting people taking discrimination cases to court or tribunal can sometimes overshadow the proactive work we do in supporting and advising business with equality issues, so it is important that we meet employers and highlight the guidance and assistance we can provide to them. The Commission spends considerable resources assisting employers across Northern Ireland to operate within our equality laws. This includes information about their responsibilities under the law, how to avoid discrimination and the development of proactive policies promoting equality of opportunity in their workplaces.”

The Employer Equality Update event was hosted by the Equality Commission and a representative from the Labour Relations Agency also spoke at the event.
