Under the Goods Vehicles (Licensing of Operators) Act (Northern Ireland) 2010, all freight operators using vehicles over 3.5 tonnes as part of a trade or business are now required to be licensed. In the past only ‘Hire or Reward’ operators were required to hold an operator’s licence, now ‘Own Account’ operators ie those who carry their own goods in the course of a trade or business will be required to hold an operator’s licence, as is the case in GB.

Full details on the regulations are available from the Department of the Environment’s website at www.doeni.gov.uk/tru. ECNI would like to encourage anyone who feels they may be affected by these regulations to attend their public information meeting on Monday, September 24, at 7.30pm in Lisburn. To assist with arrangements, it would be appreciated if you could email ECNI at [email protected] if you plan on attending.
