EU '˜remain' motion defeated at council's monthly meeting

A motion tabled by two SDLP councillors with reference to the UK remaining in the European Union was defeated at the council's monthly meeting on Monday night.

The motion put forward by Cllr Brian Duffin and seconded by his party colleague Cllr Roisin Lynch said: “This council supports the Prime Minister in his efforts to remain in Europe and in doing so Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council should write to the Prime Minister indicating the same and furthermore write to other councils asking them to do likewise.”

Following a lengthy debate on the issue, a recorded vote was taken. This resulted in the majority of members in the chamber voting against the proposal.
