Eve takes top speaking gong

A BALLYCASTLE girl has scooped a prestigious award for the second year running - for her ability to talk rubbish!

Bunscoil an Chaistil pupil Eve Gardiner won the North West section of a province-wide Youth Speak competition on how we can all contribute to reduce, resuse and recycle.

The focus was on ‘WEEE’ waste which stands for ‘Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment’.

Eve’s speech was selected by Moyle District Council to represent the local area and judges were so impressed with the 11-year-old’s presentation she took the North West regional heat - for the second year in a row.

Undaunted by a large crowd, Eve again blew the judges away at the Northern Ireland finals in Newtownabbey but was narrowly defeated by just a point at the last hurdle.

Eve’s proud dad Patrick said everyone was delighted with how Eve performed.

“She did a great job and had a lot of jokes worked into her presentation which went down very well,” he said.

“At the final there were about 200 people in the audience which would make anyone nervous.

“But she did fantastically and we are all very proud of her.

“To win the North West trophy twice in two years is a great achievement.”

And Eve’s talent didn’t go unnoticed by the compere on the night - Cool FM presenter Pete Snodden.

Pete enjoyed Eve’s witty take on the competition so much he jokingly asked her if she could pen his gags for his hit breakfast show!
