Every little helps in charity effort

People from the local community joined together to raise a total of £5,366.39 for Diabetes UK at Tesco stores inNorthcott and Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus.

Each store had team leaders and volunteers who worked tirelessly over a recent weekend to raise a fantastic amount of money.

Anumber of enthusiastic volunteers collected donations as part of the Big Collection weekend, a nationwide fundraising event for Diabetes UK.

The Big Collection weekend took place on October 4-6 throughout the UK with 7,000 volunteers taking part at over 500 Tesco stores.

The weekend was organised as part of the National Charity Partnership between Diabetes UK and Tesco. to support those living with diabetes in the UK

Ken Jackson, one of the team leaders who helped out at the Tesco Newtownabbey store, said: “Team leaders from across the Newtownabbey area would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave up their time to help collect donations over the weekend.

“The weekend was a great success and Tesco customers were incredibly generous.”

The National Charity Partnership aims to support the millions of people who live with diabetes every day; help hundreds of thousands of people take action to reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes; and fund investment into ground-breaking research for a Type 1 vaccine.

Andre Carvalho, Head of Volunteering for Diabetes UK, said: “We are delighted so many people from the community joined together to support the Big Collection, whether you were a volunteer or Tesco customer, we could not have raised so much money without you, thank you. We appreciate the warm welcome Tesco staff in Newtownabbey gave to our volunteers, it just reinforces what a great partnership we have with Tesco.”
