Exasperated butcher is burgled twice in a month

The most recent burglary at McConville Family Butchers in Gilford happened between 6pm on Thursday and 8am Friday, January 14-15, but owner Eamon McConville confirmed he had been burgled exactly one month before on December 15.

Damage was caused to the front door as the burglars forced their way into the premises.

Mr McConville believes the burglars were looking for money but left empty handed.

He said: “We haven’t discovered anything noticeable stolen yet. They seem to have came in looking money and left when they couldn’t find any.

“We were burgled a month to the day - December 15th and January 15th. I’m not sure if they’re related but the police are looking into it.”

During the previous break-in the front glass of a display fridge was damaged and charity boxes were broken and cash taken from them.

“Last time they caused a lot of damage as there was glass broken and the place was trashed but only the front door was damaged this time,” Eamon said.

“It doesn’t seem to matter what you do. If these kinds of people want in then they’ll get in.”

DUP Councillor Carla Lockhart said “It is horrendous to hear of these attacks on properties and thefts in the Gilford area. Gilford is a quiet town and this type of activity is not welcome and will not be tolerated by the local people.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the burglary at Mr McConville’s was premeditated given the footage that is available on CCTV.

“I have spoken with the PSNI regarding non-domestic burglaries and have requested that some awareness raising is carried out as to how best to protect your business from this type of activity.”
