The extravaganza was planned to promote literature and literacy throughout the school.

Key stage three pupils took part in a series of lunchtime readings which gave them the opportunity to bring their best work to the attention of a larger audience.

On Thursday, Key stage four and A-level students of English Literature attended a production of “Philadelphia!” in the Lyric Theatre, while on Friday, approximately 200 hundred pupils had a chance to hear a panel discussion by three guest speakers who testified to the importance of “English” in their careers and personal lives: John Campbell, assistant business and economics editor at the BBC, Fionnuala Deane, founder and managing editor of the Derry-based “Dog Ears” publishing company and Dr. Janine Lynch, consultant psychiatrist, who is currently studying for an Open University degree in English.

Accompanying these events was a variety of English-related activities: a book hunt, library-based competitions to mark World Book day, a quiz (“How well-read are you?), and the chance to match teachers to the fictional characters whose names they sported on their lapels throughout the week.

Head of department, Dr. Fiona Lynch said: “The members of our department are thrilled by the success of the venture.

“We have high hopes that it will raise the profile of English within St Killian’s, and that this year’s ‘Excellence in English’ will be a first annual event.”
