Larne Borough Council has tasked a team of consultants with formulating a strategy to redevelop the waterfront and former quarry area of the village.

The project aims to tap into Glenarm’s huge tourism potential, while at the same time highlighting the village’s rich sense of history as a working harbour and mill site.

Building on the work carried out previously by the Princes’ Foundation, Todd Architects have drawn up a number of proposals designed to make Glenarm a top-drawer tourist destination.

The project includes the redevelopment of Eglington Yard and the reinstatement of the old bell tower, the creation of a number of new houses and apartments in the harbour area, a new harbour car park, a quayside river walk and a new restaurant.

Also proposed is the creation of a hotel and touring caravan park in the area surrounding the old quarry.

While the Eglington Yard area of the masterplan is to be developed into a full planning application, the area around the marina and the quarry site will be for outline permission.

Larne Mayor Cllr Gerardine Mulvenna described the plans as “fantastic” and said: “A lot of time and effort has been invested by council in this exciting project, which is one of the biggest we have undertaken.

“The feedback from local people has been incredibly positive.”
