Executive moves to complete asbestos surveys

After concerns were raised by Monkstown Community Association Chairman David McCrea that more than 40 Housing Executive tenants may have their kitchen replacements delayed as their properties did not have the necessary asbestos report, the DUP representatives contacted Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland about the issue.

Following the Minister’s intervention, the Housing Executive has confirmed that it now hopes to have all the properties surveyed by March 1, and that where access is facilitated, those homes will be included in the current kitchen replacement scheme.

“I am delighted that the Minister has responded so quickly to our constituents’ concerns,” Mr Ross commented. “The Housing Executive has moved to ensure that the asbestos surveyor carries out all tests before March 1.

“They have stated that, if access to the necessary properties to be surveyed is forthcoming from the tenants, these houses will have their kitchens replaced as part of the current scheme involving 134 properties and lasting eight months.”

Mr Wilson added: “The speed of movement from the Department of Social Development and the Housing Executive shows that Stormont can deliver meaningful benefits for our people, with a much faster response rate than was seen in the days of Direct Rule.

“Local people and local representatives are a force for the good in our communities when they communicate effectively, as is the case in Monkstown and across East Antrim.”
