Exhibition celebrates Larne art

Artists exhibiting at "A Celebration of Larne Art" who attended the launch with Larne mayor Councillor Martin Wilson. INLT 34-654-CON

The exhibition will continue Friday September 12.

It features 14 artists from the Larne borough who are displaying 26 exhibits in a range of disciplines from water colours to sculpture and couture,

Participants include John Lashford; father and son, Denis and Simon McBride; designer Geraldine Connon; sculptor Miguel Neves; artist and horticultural designer Dawn Aston; Iain Baldwin; Laura Butler; Trisha Campbell; Graham Gingles; Paul Holmes; Audrey Kyle; Margaret Mathews and Robert McLearnon.

Three similar exhibitions have taken place previously after local artists were asked to submit exhibits.The exhibits include a hand-carved plate made from African tiger wood The exhibition by Portuguese artist Miguel Neves who settled in Larne in 2000. The plate is on display at the Carnegie building before it is presented to a Portuguese television programme.

The exhibition will also feature works within the fields of fine art, graphic design, fashion design and sculpture.

The event was organised by Larne Borough Council and opened by mayor Councillor Martin Wilson on Friday August 8.

One of the organisers said: “The exhibition hopes to promote local art to a wide audience; reflecting the diverse range of talent found within the borough. This is an exhibition which is not to be missed by anyone with a love of art.

“Visitors are invited to enjoy this exciting new exhibition and appreciate the skill and technique of the pieces on display. It is a great opportunity to view the work of some of Northern Ireland’s widely acclaimed and well-known artists.

“The exhibition has something for everyone to enjoy both traditional and contemporary: whether it’s Geraldine Connon’s mesmerising collection of clothing, and drawings, John Lashford’s contemporary expressionism or Dawn Aston’s beautifully crafted mosaics.”

Dawn said: “There are a lot of artists in the borough, some just quietly working away. It is very nice to be involved as part of the local community. This exhibition shows how diverse art can be.”

The museum’s opening hours are Monday to Friday, from 10.00 am until 4.30 pm.
