Explosive event to greet UK City of Culture 2013 at 20:13 on New Year’s Eve

LONDONDERRY Mayor Kevin Campbell is encouraging families to greet UK City of Culture 2013 at exactly 20:13 on New Year’s Eve at a major fireworks display on the River Foyle.

It will be the first fireworks display in Londonderry on New Year’s Eve since the turn of the millennium.

The celebratory event is specifically designed for families and will take place along the Riverfront at Queen’s Quay.

Commencing from 19:50 – 20:30 (7.50pm-8.30pm) the celebration will include the city’s largest fireworks and pyrotechnic show at 20:13 (8.13pm) to welcome in 2013.

Said Mr Campbell: “This New Year’s Eve event promises to be a great opportunity for families to come along to the riverfront and celebrate the start of 2013 and be part of the huge opportunities that it presents.

“It will mark the start of a fantastic year for our city as we tell our new story to the world and prepare to host an exciting range of cultural events throughout the year,” the Mayor said.

Culture Company 2013 Chairman Martin Bradley said: “This will be a special way to mark the start of what will be the most momentous year in the history of our city.

“The City of Culture year is now almost upon us and this is a wonderful way for the people of Derry~Londonderry to come out and usher it in.”

Ilex’s Interim Chief Executive Mel Higgins said: “There is a sense of excitement and ambition in the city as we prepare to enter 2013.

“A lot of work has been completed and will continue to be done to enhance our cultural infrastructure to ensure that a legacy is left for future generations. I would like to encourage everyone to participate at this time of positive change.”

Queen’s Quay and Ebrington Square zones will be open to the public from 19:00 hrs (7pm).

Local composer Frank Gallagher is creating the soundtrack while international company Walk the Plank are providing the creative fireworks and riverfront show.
