Explosive start to a day's work!

STAFF at a charity shop in Glengormley got the start of their lives on Tuesday morning as they were sorting through bags of donated goods.

Because found nestling in amongst second-hand clothes handed in to the Cancer Research shop on the Antrim Road, was a World War II hand grenade!

Shop manager Nessie Kernaghan made the startling discovery as she worked alongside assistant manager Joan Armstrong.

"Finding the hand grenade certainly gave us both a bit of a shock," Joan told the Times.

"We knew it wasn’t a toy, but also that it didn't have a pin in it so we didn't think it was primed to go off or anything, but still it was a bizarre find amongst all the clothes.

"We contacted the police about it and they said they would come over and take it away so they could dispose of it properly.

"After the initial shock we were able to laugh about the whole incident, but it was certainly a strange and startling beginning to the day for us!"

"The item was found to be an empty casing and was removed by police for disposal."
