Extra funding for YMCA project

ADDITIONAL funding has been secured by the YMCA for it's new build project in Carnegie Street.

Plans are in the pipeline for a new YMCA building which is hoped will be able to offer a more comprehensive service than the current underground facility in the centre of the town.

An extra 156,000 has been awarded by the International Fund for Ireland bringing the total from the organisation to 856,000.

Hugo Dale, chief executive of Lurgan YMCA, said it had been a long process so far but he was looking forward to the completion of the project.

He said: "All the funding is in place and we are just waiting on the go-ahead form the Department of Education.

"We should get that in the next week and then we can start the tendering process and hopefully building work will begin by the end of September."

Mr Dale said there had been a number of problems along the way: "I was just reading the minutes from a meeting in January 2007 when we were discussing the project. Since then there have been numerous problems, but we have overcome them and are looking forward to getting into the building.

"Hopefully we are on schedule to get into the new facility by Christmas 2011."

He added: "The new building will help us develop on the services that we are currently delivering like our summer scheme, residentials, mural projects and expeditions. It will be very different and very significant for Lurgan.

"There will be all sorts of facilities available and we will be working very closely with peace building and community workers.

"We will also have an international exchange programme and visitors will be able to stay in a secure flat in the new building."
