The money will also be used to carry out further landscaping works at the Culmore and Ballyarnett roundabouts later this year.

The ‘Pride In Our City’ project will be delivered by the Grounds Maintenance Department of Derry City Council.

“These enhancements will create a positive first, and last, impression to visitors who travel these routes to and from the Walled City. The imaginative planting of the roundabouts will see trees, seasonal bedding and more sustainable planting, requiring less maintenance,” said the Minister.

“The addition of new planters will also contribute to wonderful displays of colour along the west and east banks of the riverside walkways,” he added.

The Mayor of Londonderry Brenda Stevenson said that due to significant funding from the Department, the city and in particular the Quayside area, have never looked so good.

Mayor Stevenson commented: “Over the summer months and following on from the phenomenal success of the LegenDerry Maritime Festival as hosts of the Clipper Race yachts, we have welcomed thousands of international visitors to the city.

“In particular, the Quay walkway area was transformed by the work of Derry City Council’s ground maintenance and cleansing team who worked to ensure that the floral displays where in place and blooming bright and colourful.”

She continued: “The landscaping and planting that has been carried out at a number of roundabouts is significant in adding to the transformation of the city and providing a landscaped beautiful city for locals and visitors alike.”

The Mayor concluded: “The continuation of support from the Department for Social Development this year and previous years in enabling this work is as always very much appreciated.”
