Extra security measures necessary: Martin

THE "very real" threat of violence from dissident republican groups such as the Real IRA, the Continuity IRA and Óglaigh na hÉireann makes enhanced security measures in Londonderry necessary says PSNI Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin.

Speaking about the recent increase in security, the PSNI's G District commander, said he was keen to reassure the community that everything was being done to keep disruption to a minimum.

"First and foremost our priority is to keep the community and police officers safe from harm.

"Recent events over the last few weeks have clearly demonstrated that dissident republicans are intent on causing death, injury and instability.

"Part of our efforts to respond to this threat is an increased security presence in our cities, towns and villages.

"Frome time to time the public may experience some disruption as they go about their day to day business – where possible we will make every effort to minimise delays and congestion.

"I understand the inconvenience vehicle checkpoints can cause and I share the frustrations of the public however I am asking for their support and their patience.

"This is not our preferred style of policing however it is necessary given the very real threat that exists at this time."

G District comprises the Foyle, Strabane, Magherafelt and Limavady areas.
