Fake priest representative called to home of elderly Lurgan brothers

Police are probing after a man, claiming to have been sent by a priest to give a blessing, called at the home of two elderly men near Lurgan.

According to the PSNI an unexpected caller arrived at the doorstep of a 90-year-old man.

His 87-year-old brother was also in the house. T

“he caller claimed to have been sent around by the local priest to give him a blessing,” said the PSNI.

“Thankfully the caller wasn’t admitted into the house and no harm came to either gentlemen.

“On checking with the local priest it was confirmed to be false. A neighbour reported the incident to police,” said the police spokesperson.

“Cold callers will use any excuse to get in through the door of people’s houses as this example clearly shows - using the Church as an excuse to prey on two elderly and vulnerable gentlemen.

“Thankfully nowadays people are more clued up about cold callers. We still have valuable members of our communities that are vulnerable for various reasons and may need that extra wee bit of support from those around them.

“You know who they are in your neighbourhood - please keep a wee eye out for them, especially over the winter months.

“We still recommend our ‘No Cold Caller’ stickers - they give a very clear message!
