Family make emotional trip

A local family have made an emotional trip to Italy to visit the grave of a relative killed during the Second World War.

Albert Lyttle, orginally from the Edenderry area of Portadown, but with a large family now living in the Lurgan area, was a member of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers who fought and died at the age of just 23 on April 8, 1944. He died during the Battle of Anzio.

His wife, Margaret, better known as Peggy, had never been able to make the trip to Italy to see where he was buried in Cassino War Cemetery. Neither had his children - Olive and Ronnie - who have since passed away.

Albert’s granddaugther Tracey Cardwell commented: “Neither my grandmother, nor my mum nor my uncle had even been able to make the trip to see where he was buried so it was something that we wanted to do for them.

“We’d talked about going for years and finally my friend Joanne (Cunningham) found out all the information about which airport we should fly to, etc to be close to Cassino War Cemetery where he is buried and we booked it.”

Tracey added: “The trip was amazing, we called gran from beside the grave and it was very emotional. Cassino Cemetery was so peaceful, beautiful and very well maintained. It was a trip that will be remembered forever.”
