Farewell to long-serving firefighters

Ballymena's Fire and Rescue team said farewell to two of their most experienced members at a ceremony in the Waveney Road Station.

Crew Commanders Sam McConkey and Ian Courtney are retiring with almost seventy years extinguished service between them.

Sam joined as a fireman in September 1979 with Ian joining in early 1985.

Both men were promoted to the rank of Crew Commander in December 2003.

Having served the community in Ballymena and beyond for most of their adult life they are now going to hang up their helmets and enjoy life at a slightly slower pace.

District Commander Colin Dickson said: “We thank them for their commitment to the safety of the people in Ballymena and the surrounding areas and to mark this occasion they are being presented with engraved statues.”
