Father and daughter die in road crash

A FATHER and daughter - understood to be from Castledawson - died last night in a road accident on the outskirts of Magherafelt.

They were killed in a collision involving a car and lorry close to the Coolshinney Road junction on the Moneymore Road around 10.40pm on Thursday.

Two other people sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.

A stretch of the roadway is currently closed while police carry out an examination of the scene.

Local DUP councillor Anne Forde described the accident as “very tragic”, particularly coming up to Christmas.

Expressing her sympathy to the family, she said local roads had now claimed four lives in as many weeks.

“I would appeal for all motorists to exercise great care while driving on winter roads,” she said.

The accident has resulted in traffic tailbacks in Magherafelt town centre this morning. Traffic diversions are expected to remain at Moneymore Road until midday.
