Father and son in court on drugs offences

A pensioner and his son have appeared side by side in the dock at Coleraine Magistrates Court and admitted drugs offences.

David Victor Burns (68), whose address had previously been listed as Cloyfin Road, Coleraine, and his son David Burns (35), of Millrush Drive, Portstewart, appeared at court on May 23.

Burns Snr now lives at Millrush Drive, the court heard.

David Victor Burns admitted possession of cannabis and cultivating a cannabis plant at his former address.

The offences were detected on June 21 last year.

Charges of intent to supply cannabis and possession of criminal property which David Victor Burns had faced were withdrawn.

David Burns Jnr admitted charges of possessing cannabis and two charges of possessing an air rifle without a licence.

Charges of intent to supply cannabis and cultivating a cannabis plant along with a charge of possessing criminal property were withdrawn and against David Burns.

Pre-sentence reports will now be prepared and they are due back in court in June.

A GARVAGH man waiting for surgery used cannabis to self medicate for pain relief, his solicitor John Murphy said.

Darren James Kennedy (28), of Main Street, had his case dealt with at Coleraine Magistrates Court on May 23 and he pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing the Class B drug and was fined £250.

Police searched his home and the defendant told police where £16 worth of the drug was in the house.
