Father and teenage daughter rescued surfing

Shortly after midday a 999 call was received reporting two surfers in difficulties off the East Strand.

The Coleraine Coastguard Team was tasked to the scene, along with the Inshore Lifeboat.

On arrival, Coastguards located a father and his teenage daughter who had been caught in a rip current and swept out to sea.

Fortunately they had stayed together, clinging to their boards, until they were able to escape from the current and regain the safety of the beach. They were given appropriate safety advice by the Coastguard Team.

Speaking after the incident, Coleraine Coastguard Station Officer Chris Little, told The Coleraine Times: “This incident demonstrates just how easy it is to be swept out by rip currents.

“We would urge all water users to be as well prepared as possible and to wear all appropriate safety equipment. If you do get into difficulty, stay with your board or craft and signal for help- it is also advisable to have someone on shore who is aware of your progress.

“Take heed of all warning signs and seek advice from experienced local surfers if you are not familiar with the area.”
