FDI call for oldscience park

WITH all the fanfare surrounding a new proposed £12m science park at Fort George, SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood has spared a thought for Londonderry’s original technology campus in Springtown.

He has asked Investment Minister Arlene Foster whether she will visit the Ulster Science and Technology Park, Londonderry, with a view to increasing Foreign Direct Investment in the North West.

Mrs Foster replied: “I would ask the Member to send visit requests through the normal appropriate channels within my Department where they will be considered in line with all other invitations.”

His question on the Branch and Buncrana Road park comes as the Department of Social Development (DSD) plans to lease part of the Fort George military base in Londonderry to the North West Regional Science Park in 2013/14.

The Fort George site was acquired by DSD in 2004 and transferred to the Londonderry urban regeneration company ILEX for redevelopment.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland recently revealed that it will lease part of the site to the NWRSP during the next financial year.

Mr McCausland stated that DSD will “lease part of the site to the NWRSP in 2013/14 although DSD will retain the freehold for the site, but the land will be controlled by the Science Park.”
