Fears as badger baiters strike in the area

Badger baiters maybe operating in the Glenavy and Stoneyford areas, animal welfare groups have claimed.

Police are investigating signs of disturbances to badger setts at two different locations at Filterbeds and on the Leathemstown Road.

The Northern Ireland Badger group and the USPCA say that they are worried at the recent incidents and have urged anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity in these areas to report it to the police.

Criminal gangs have been blamed, who use terrier dogs to hunt out the protected animals from their setts. They are then killed in what has been described as a ‘sickening spectacle’.

It is illegal to hunt badgers and disturb their setts. They are protected under the Northern Ireland Wildlife Order 1985 and the Welfare of Animals Act 2011.

“Badgers are being dug from their setts by these depraved criminals using spades and terriers in broad daylight,“ said a spokesperson for the NI Badger Group.

“When badgers are brought above ground they are ripped to shreds by the dogs in a sickening spectacle to satisfy the blood lust of the ghouls involved.

“We want these criminal gangs tracked down and brought before the courts given meaningful custodial sentences, heavy fines and banned for life from owning or being in possession of any animal. The punishment should fit the crime.”

David Wilson from the USPCA described badger baiting as ‘unmistaken cruelty’.

“This is such a cruel activity,” said Mr Wilson. “Badgers are very protective and will fight but dogs suffer too. I have seen dogs where their jaws have been ripped off after one of these attacks.”

Police say they have received reports of possible badger baiting in the area and are working with local wildlife groups.

Where an individual is aware of, or suspects badge baiting is happening, they are encouraged to call 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers 0800 55111.
