Festival of Flowers

ST AUGUSTINE’S Church, known affectionately as ‘the wee church on the walls, is making its final preparations for its Footprints of St Columba Festival of Flowers, from Friday to Sunday, June 10 to 12.

Looking forward to the Festival, its Rector Rev Pat Storey talked about the plans for the special event.

“We are so fortunate to live in a city with so much history. St Columba is one of the most famous saints to be associated with the city and St Augustine’s is delighted to celebrate his life. Our Footprints of St Columba Festival is going to be one more attraction for our neighbours in the city as well as the many tourists who walk our ancient walls. We give a warm welcome to them all,” she said.

As well as being able to view the beautiful floral decorations created by the Londonderry Floral Arts Society there will be an opportunity to have morning coffee or afternoon tea.

St Augustine’s is one of the most ancient sites within the city, nestling as it does on the city walls. It is already a tourist attraction with literally thousands of visitors coming though its doors to admire its beautiful and historic architecture.

The preparations for The Steps of St Columba have included a number of social events. One of the most recent was a photographic exhibition by younger members of the congregation. Noted local photographer Julie McPherson from McPherson Photography happens to be a member of St Augustine’s. She worked with a group of the young people to exhibit their photographs of local scenes in the Church Hall.

A warm welcome will be offered by the parish to all their neighbours in every part of the city. It is advisable for groups that wish to visit to book in advance. They can do so by ringing 028 71301611.
