‘Fierce’ blaze destroys Hillsborough premises

Around 50 fire fighters tackled a huge fire at a shed at a Hillsborough building merchants on Sunday afternoon.

The fire, which completely destroyed the shed, is believed to have started accidentally.

Six fire pumps and four specialist vehicles were involved in controlling the blaze at Stanfield, based on the Dromore Road, including an aerial appliance, two water tankers and a command unit.

The building was well alight when fire crews arrived, shortly after 3.30pm and whilst they were attempting to put the fire under control the roof collapsed.

Fire crews spent a total of ten hours at the scene and left at around 1am.

The fire was reported at 3.20pm with the first crews attending the scene at 3.30pm.

Several relief crews were brought into to assist the three appliances from Lisburn.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Area Commander Randy McComb described the fire as ‘fierce.’

“We had just under 50 officers fighting the fire,” Mr McComb said.

“There was a lot of combustibles there, including a lot of timber so it was a big fire.

“The roof of the building later collapsed and it was totally destroyed.

“There were no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire has been ascertained as ‘accidental.’”

Four Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were deployed and used two jets and one hose reel jet and the aerial jet to deal with the outbreak.

There were no reports of any injuries and the exact cause of the fire is not yet clear, said Mr McComb.

The fire was finally brought under complete control by 20.53hrs.
