Fighting rising tide of debt

A LOCAL Christian charity is helping fight the rising tide of debt.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) has revealed that many Lurgan people are struggling with debt after excessive spending over the festive period.

The debt counselling charity is offering a free service to people in the town to help with mounting debt issues.

CAP has operated a centre in Lurgan in partnership with Magheralin Parish since November last year.

With credit card bills coming through from the festive period and many reeling from the effects of the recession, the charity was concerned the New Year would be a very difficult time financially and that many more people would be in need of its free service.

Basil O’Malley, CAP centre manager, said: "Whilst many have enjoyed a fantastic Christmas, the effects of overspending are now starting to be felt by those in the community.

"We are concerned that the pressure to create the perfect Christmas, coupled with the difficulties the recession, has led to many more people being in need of our free service.

"The good news is, though, that we are able to provide hope and a solution to those who are trapped in debt.

"I know that together we will be able to help those struggling in the worst recession in thirty years.

"There has never been a more important time for people to contact us if they’re in debt. I would urge anyone not to bury their head in the sand and seek help as soon as possible.

"Our service is totally free and open to all, regardless of whether you’re a Christian or not, so please call us and find out how we can help you."
