Finaghy PS pupils raise £5k for charities

DURING Easter week, the pupils and staff of Finaghy PS undertook a sponsored 1000km Olympic Multi-Sports Challenge to raise funds for Oasis Village, Africa, The Belfast Children’s Heartbeat Trust, and Finaghy PS PTA. An amazing total of £5100 was raised.

Pupils participated in ‘Olympic Challenges’ including track & field, and a walk through Finaghy. Meanwhile, teachers and assistants were hosted for a day by DW Sports & Fitness to build up some kilometres on running, rowing and cycling machines. The Principal was even talked into swimming 200 lengths of the DW pool! A grand total of 1232km was achieved, smashing their 1000km target.

Belfast Children’s Heartbeat Trust, based in the Royal Hospital, provides care to local children and families, including one of Finaghy Primary’s own pupils.

Oasis Village is an orphanage in Zambia, run by the sister of one of the school’s teachers, and the PTA intends to use their share to help them to build a new Eco-garden at the school.

Principal Alastair Mackay commented: “This was our first charity event to involve staff as well as pupils. It was a great bonding experience for everyone. Given these ‘credit crunch’ times, we were astounded by the generosity of the children, their parents and the local community.”
