Final shutdown: Village stations to close on August 31

Broughshane and Portglenone police stations will close at the end of this month - despite local campaigns to keep them open.

They will cease to be operational from midnight on August 31, a police spokesperson confirmed on Friday.

The policing service for the area will be delivered from Ballymena, where the Broughshane and Portglenone Neighbourhood teams will now commence their shifts.

The official closure comes as part of an overall estates review, the results of which were published in March 2012.

The review considered a range of options concerning stations across H district.

It included extensive consultation with members of the community and elected representatives.

Inspector John Allen said:: “The closure of the stations is a poignant event for the many people in the community.

“ However policing isn’t about buildings, it is about officers working with the community and delivering a personal, professional and protective service.

“Our neighbourhood officers will continue to work in and around the Broughshane and Portglenone areas and will be as visible as ever.

“Members of the public can continue to contact police on 0845 600 8000 or in the case of an emergency please dial 999.

“Our website provides full contact details for the Ballymena Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team,” he said.
