Fine for disorderly man

A PORTRUSH man who suffers from alcoholism has been before North Antrim Magistrates' Court.

Stephen William Surgenor (43) of Mark Street in Portrush was charged with disorderly behaviour following an incident in Portrush on June 17 this year.

Court heard that police were called by Surgenor’s landlady who reported that he was highly intoxicated.

When police arrived they saw Surgenor in a drunken state, shouting obscenities about paedophiles and the UVF.

Surgenor’s defence, Rhonda Boyd told the court that her client’s comments had not been directed at anyone. She said that he had some mental health issues and had a life-long battle with alcohol.

Ms Boyd told the court that Surgenor has been residing at the Mark Street hostel for some four years, and that on the day in question he had just had ‘an outburst’.

She added that Surgenor had an ‘excellent’ relationship with his landlady.

District Judge Richard Wilson warned Surgenor about his behaviour telling him that if it persisted he would end up in jail.

The Judge fined him 300.
