Fined for shoplifting

A HOMELESS man who stole cereal bars and other food items from Dunnes Stores has been fined £30 at the local court.

David Boyd, 19, appeared at Larne Magistrate’s Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to three charges of shoplifting.

Boyd admitted stealing 2.57 worth of confectionery on August 20 and 2.90 worth of Nutri-Grain bars and drinks on the same date.

He also admitted taking 1.69 worth of food items on August 16.

The defence lawyer told the court that Boyd had been homeless and was placed in the Simon Community.

He added: “This is a tragic case of a young man in an area where he doesn’t know anyone and has no money, so he resorts to stealing cereal bars to help keep him going.

“He is now living in Portadown and has some structure in his life.”

District Judge Robert Alcorn imposed a fine of 10 on each charge.
