Finishing rail work by Easter will be ‘very challenging’

ENGINEERS working on the Londonderry to Coleraine rail renewal project will find it ‘very challenging’ to finish the job before next Easter as a result of the project having been brought forward to facilitate UK City of Culture 2013.

But Rail Minister Danny Kennedy said he would make an announcement if there were any changes to the timescale for completion of the work.

DUP MLA Gregory Campbell asked the Minister for Regional Development whether he expected the track relaying work between Coleraine and Londonderry to be completed, and the line re-instated, before Easter 2013, which falls on March 31.

Mr Kennedy replied: “Phase 1 of the Coleraine to Londonderry Track Renewals project is scheduled to be completed in April 2013. As a result of the project being brought forward, the programme of works to be completed during the closure of the line between July 2012 and April 2013, including other works such as the refurbishment of the Bann Bridge, is very challenging.

“However, Translink will continually keep progress of the works under review and if there is any change to the timescales, interested parties will be notified accordingly.”
