Fiona's colourful artwork brightens up hospital unit

THE Whiteabbey and Moyle ArtsCare Committee has unveiled an extension to the artwork in the garden outside the Intermediate Care Unit at Moyle Hospital.

Research has shown that well-designed hospital gardens provide a calming and soothing environment where patients and relatives can relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

Donald McWhirter, co-chairperson of Whiteabbey and Moyle ArtsCare Committee said: “The garden now has a much more pleasant aspect for patients in the unit with the mosaics on the walls bringing in more colour and light.

“We hope the new mosaics and garden will be an area where patients, relatives and staff can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings”.

Local artist, Fiona Rainey, extended the existing mosaic wall outside the unit. She said: “The pieces of work were intended to be introductions or endings to the mosaic which already existed in the garden.

“At the end of the sun spiral made of mirrors was an imposing grey plastered wall – dull and lifeless compared to what surrounded it so I decided to create a tree of life, a tree of happiness and light. I used mirror extensively on the tree to maximise light effect. The colours are warm and friendly.

“When one patient remarked that the new mosaic was her favourite piece I was delighted that we had achieved our aim of bringing some happiness to the patients of the unit through art.” she said.
