The Western Trust say there is no impact or disruption to patients and the building was unoccupied.

Glenelly/Dennett House is owned by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) and was built in the late 19th century. It was used by Oakgrove College from 1992 to 2007.

Community worker Paul Hughes from the Enagh Youth Forum has consistently highlighted the need for more to be done with the ‘former asylum’ at Gransha Park.

“This old building has so much potential. Derry is crying out for an outdoor education/residential centre; this building would be ideal giving its close proximity to Gransha Woods and the Enagh Loughs.

“Despite us highlighting this as far back as 2012, nothing has been done, A number of political parties were also contacted about this issue and again nothing was done.

“However, it is election time and we would encourage everyone living in the rural Faughan area to challenge all those seeking your vote when they call to your door. Ask them what they are going to do to restore this building for public use.”
