Fire lays waste to recycling plant

A FIRE has laid waste to a recycling plant on the outskirts of Londonderry.

The blaze, described as "severe" by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, broke out just after 10am on Tuesday morning at Campsie's Mobuoy Road in a waste recycling machine inside the City Industrial Waste premises.

Residents were warned to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors shut as smoke billowed from the large complex.

A spokeswoman for the service said: "NIFRS received a call at 10.20am to attend a fire at City Industrial Waste, Mobuoy Road, Campsie.

"Six appliances, one aerial platform, two water tankers, a specialist high volume pumping unit and a command support unit attended the scene dealing with a severe fire."

The inferno which spread to bales of recycled waste, continued to smoulder throughout the day after being dampened down by firefighters.

When contacted by the Sentinel, City Industrial Waste refused to comment on the incident.

Meanwhile a house in St John's Park in Derry was badly damaged in an early morning fire on Tuesday. No one was hurt.
