Fire station open nights

Firefighters are opening their stations to inform people of the dangers of smoking in the home with the intention of reducing accidental house fires.

The Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to come along to one of their annual Fire Safety Open Nights at Fire Stations during Fire Safety Week from 5 to 11 October.

An open night takes place in Lurgan fire station tonight (Tuesday, October 6) from 7-9pm and Portadown fire station on Saturday (October 10) from 3-5pm.

The ‘dangers of smoking in the home’ with a focus on trying to reduce accidental fires which are caused by careless use or disposal of smoking materials is the theme of this year’s Fire Safety Week.

Marty Thomson of the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said: “We are opening stations to the public to come and meet the people who are on call for them 24 hours a day.”
