Firefighter dies during Lurgan callout

A Firefighter has died suddenly while dealing with a car fire in Lurgan last night.

The NI Fire and Rescue Service said the firefighter collapsed at the scene.

Chris Kerr, Chief Fire Officer, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said: “It is with deep regret that I can confirm that a Firefighter died suddenly while on operational duty last night (Monday 10 February 2014). Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.

“Firefighters were called to deal with a car on fire at 9.31pm last night at Deeny Drive, Kilwilkee Estate, Lurgan. One Appliance from Lurgan Fire Station was in attendance at 9.36pm and the fire was brought under control at 9.47pm. Shortly afterwards a Firefighter collapsed at the scene.

“Colleagues gave immediate first aid and requested an ambulance to scene. The Firefighter was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken by ambulance to Craigavon Area Hospital and despite the best efforts of medical staff he was later pronounced dead.

“No further details are available at present and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of our colleague is underway.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police received a report of an unconscious male in the Deeny Drive area of Lurgan at 9.56pm on Monday, 10 February.

“The male was taken to hospital and later died.

“Health and Safety Executive are investigating and all media enquiries should be directed to the HSE.”
