First Derry Church hosts Garden of Reflection event

The Garden of Reflection is hosting the first of its Chairs of Learning events on Friday, 15th November.
The theme for the event is ‘Interculturalism and the Challenges and Opportunities that it presents for Our City’.

The City Centre Garden of Reflection Project is a partnership between Inner City Trust (Lead Partner), Derry City Council and DiverseCity Community Partnership.

In addition to the programme element, the project has two major physical elements – the installation of lights to illuminate the City Walls and the development of the Garden of Reflection to the rear of the currently being developed Holywell building in Bishop Street. The project has been funded by the PEACE III Programme through the European Union’s Regional Development Fund managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

The keynote address at the session will be delivered by Phil Wood, and the Garden of Reflection is delighted that he has agreed to be the first Chair of Learning - the Chair of Interculturalism.

A spokesperson said: “Phil brings a wealth of expertise and experience as a pioneer in the field of interculturalism.

“He has been widely published on the topic and is principal advisor to the Council of Europe on its Intercultural Cities programme and the architect of its methodology. This promises to be an engaging session that will have space for conversations on the issues arising”.

Gerard Deane, Garden of Reflection Programme Co-ordinator, outlined the thinking behind the Chairs of Interculturalism, “When considering the first of our Chairs of Learning we were immediately drawn to the notion of ‘interculturalism’. The Garden of Reflection project will help to transform our city centre into a place where difference is welcomed and celebrated.
