First ‘mathathon’ in Lisnagelvin PS

SEVENTY children will take part in the first ever ‘Mathathon’ to be held in the city in Lisnagelvin Primary School on Saturday, November 26.

The aim is to make mathematics come alive by challenging pupils to complete as many easy sums as possible in just ten minutes.

Organiser Sumeeta Gupta explained: “To my knowledge this is the first ever such event to be organised in Derry in any school. The number of children participating are roughly 70.”

She said the main objective was to build confidence in children and to apply the skills they have learned in schools and also in their day to day activities.

“The effect of this activity can be highly motivating for children as they recognise their own potential and become more confident especially those children who find this subject a bit of a challenge.

“The worksheets will be designed to suit each age group. Sample revision worksheets will be provided to the children a week before for practice,” she explained.

The event is open to all children aged between five and eleven.

The event will commence at 10.30am on Saturday, November 26. Certificates will be awarded to each participant
