First media studentsgraduate with top marks

AT first glance it would be hard to see why students would celebrate being awarded three D’s - however when the D stands for distinction it makes perfect sense.

For Lisburn students Tony McVeigh and Rory Hughes it was celebration time when they received a ‘Triple D’ in their National Diploma Media Production qualification which they studied at South Eastern Regional College (SERC).

The triple distinction is the equivalent to 3 A’s at A Level and provided them with the necessary UCAS points to further their education at university.

Tony will be continuing his education in a couple of weeks when he starts an IT degree at Queen’s University while Rory is currently preparing for a move across the water to Bournemouth where he will study Computer Game Design.

Tony and Rory were also part of the first cohort of students to graduate from the National Diploma in Media Production course at SERC Lisburn Campus. Previously the course had only been offered at the college’s other campuses but was introduced to Lisburn two years ago.

During their course they were involved in a number of different projects including producing promotional videos for local wedding planning website – Lisburn4Weddings. The video they produced was of such a high standard that it was entered into SERC’s annual Film Festival which sees over 100 students compete against each other for titles such as ‘Best Script’, ‘Best Editor’ and ‘Best Documentary’.

Ian McCormick, Head of School for Computing and Software Engineering; “I would like to congratulate the Tony and Rory on achieving distinction grades. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects their commitment and effort given to their studies during the past two years. As the first cohort of students to complete this course at the Lisburn campus they have set a benchmark for their peers and are a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.”
