First Minister trumpets Kelvin and broadband access

THE Project Kelvin telecommunications link landfalling in County Londonderry provides us with an unequalled data transfer rate into the US, Canada and Europe.

First Minister Peter Robinson told the Stormont Assembly that the multi-million pound Hibernia Atlantic link-up puts Northern Ireland ahead of the field in terms of high speed telecom connections.

Informing the Stormont Assembly of developments at the fifteenth meeting of the British Irish Council (BIC) in the Isle of Man in December he mentioned our new digital infrastructure saying Northern Ireland now has 100 per cent broadband access although he admitted there were imperfections in some places.

He told Assembly Members: "We have 100 per cent broadband accessibility across Northern Ireland, although there are indicators that it is a little shaky in some places.

"However, we are moving to the next generation of broadband in Northern Ireland. Indeed, we are probably in the lead for broadband coverage in the whole of Europe.

"As the Member will know, we have moved on with Project Kelvin, which gives us an unequalled data transfer rate into North America and Europe."
