First Protestant alienation discussion forum

A PROGRAMME geared at addressing Protestant alienation in Londonderry, Donegal and Tyrone will hold its first major discussion forum at the Sollus Centre in Bready next week.

The Gateway to Protestant Participation (GPP) is designed to encourage the participation of the Protestant community by promoting a shared sense of belonging and addressing issues of marginalisation and tackling attitudes to racism and sectarianism, at a local level within the North West Peace III Cluster area.

The guest speaker at the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, at 7pm, is Dr Peter Shirlow, Queen's University, who will give his opinion and experiences of Protestant alienation.

All those attending will have the opportunity to discuss and explore issues related to and their experiences of Protestant alienation in facilitated workshops.

Spearheading the programme is Willie Lamrock of the Londonderry YMCA, who explained: "This discussion forum is the first in a series of three to provide Protestant with an opportunity to discuss issues affecting their communities and impacting on their lives.

"The information and key themes arising from this discussion forum will inform the work of the GPP programme over the next year.

"We believe it is important to have a general discussion, ably facilitated to set a plan and a direction for the way ahead. It is important at this early stage that as many people as possible have an input into the direction of the programme.
