Fishing bonus!

PARTICIPATION in both river and sea fishing has grown in popularity in recent years and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) Inland Fisheries are doing all they can to further stimulate interest.

Last Wednesday staff from Movanagher spent the day re-stocking tributaries and streams around the Ballymoney area with some 200 healthy two-year-old brown trout from Movanagher Fish Farm in Kilrea.

It is understood that salmon was also placed in the rivers in the North Antrim area making it a bonanza for fishermen young and old.

The amount of fish placed in streams and rivers is determined by a census carried out to find out how many people are taking part in the pastime.

Gary Little and David Morrison explained: “There appears to be a growing interest in fishing particularly amongst young people.

“Many find it a very relaxing experience and when there’s a catch or two it’s all the more worthwhile.”
