Fishing trip lands in court

When police stopped a 39-year-old at a checkpoint in Gilford they could smell alcohol on his breath.

Gary Stanfield, whose address was given as Charles Baron Gardens, Lurgan, was banned from driving for 12 months last Thursday at Banbridge Magistrates Court.

He was also fined £150 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy for driving with excess alcohol on July 5 this year.

The court heard that he was stopped at a checkpoint at Dunbarton Street in Gilford and there was a smell of alcohol on his breath. An evidential test gave a reading of 52.

A solicitor representing the defendant said he had been away fishing and had taken a few drinks on the way home.

Stanfield was deemed suitable for the drink driving course which if he completes would reduce his ban to nine months.
